Softball Earns First Win, Leaves with Split

The Golden Rams of Anoka-Ramsey Community College traveled to the Rosemount Irish Dome on Tuesday, March 23, and came away with their first win of the young season by defeating Hibbing by the score of 4-3. The team dropped their second game of the day to Bottineau 14-4.

The opening game of the day was highly contested through-out. Anoka-Ramsey broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning when Kayla McHugo drew a lead-off walk. She advanced to second on a wonderful sacrifice bunt by Emili Waite. Emma Bright followed with a single to left, and then Mckenna Packard ripped a single driving in both runs.

Hibbing scored in the top of the fourth to make the score 2-1. The Golden Rams put up another two runs in their half of the fifth inning on base hits by Waite, Bright, a walk to Madison Segler and an RBI single by Christina Meyer.

The Cardinal closed the lead with two runs in their top of the sixth, but could get no closer. Getting two hits a piece for the team were Bright and Segler. Sunny Strait was amazing in the circle picking up the win. Strait struck out 14 batters while only walking one.

The second game of the day against Bottineau started out as a slugfest. Bottineau put up four runs in the top of the first inning off six hits. Anoka-Ramsey struck back with two runs of their own on back-to-back, first ever collegiate home runs by Packard and Segler.

The game stayed tied until the bottom of the fourth inning when the Golden Rams scored two more times. Base hits by McHugo and Bright set the table for Packard who hit a shot to right center field for a two-out double, driving in both runners and tying the game at four apiece.

Strait, pitching her second game in a row, tired from throwing a lot of pitches on the day and Bottineau took advantage by scoring 10 runs the last three innings. Strait fought and battled hard, but just ran out of gas.

Offensively, the Golden Rams were led by Packard who went 3-4 with a double, HR, & two RBI.  Bright and Strait had two hits each.

The Golden Rams (1-3) are slated to play again next Friday, April 2 and Saturday, April 3 in the RCTC Bubble where they will play two games each day.
